Each napkin has been woven on a back strap loom. Backstrap loom weaving is an ancient weaving technique practiced for centuries in many parts of the world. All of our Guatemalan placemats are hand dyed and then hand woven on a back strap loom. The looms are simple - typically 6-7 rods- often handmade by the weaver and are easily portable making weaving an activity that can be done almost anywhere. The back rod of the loom is tied to a tree or post and the other end has a strap that encircles the waist or backside to allow the weaver to move back or forward to produce the necessary tension while weaving takes place. This type of weaving is a time intensive process and the end result is always unique.
These placemats are made from 100% cotton and handmade in Guatemala.
Machine wash cold.
