Crafted out of our original Guatemalan vibrant pink and blue jaspe design, this oblong cushion with navy scalloped trim is a collector's item. Handwoven on a backstrap loom in Guatemala this fabric is inspired by the long weaving traditions of the country and was inspired by pieces from our founder's great grandmother, Lilly De Jongh's extensive textile collection. With Blithfield’s blue ‘Wicklewood’ fabric on the reverse, this cushion looks fabulous front and back and can be flipped over for a fresh new look in your room.
This cushion measures 35 cm x 50 cm and is filled with an oversized down insert to ensure maximum comfort. It has an invisible zip in the bottom seam and is handcrafted in the U.K. from handwoven Guatemalan fabric on the front and trimmed with a playful navy ric rac. This cushion also comes with a hand block printed dust bag.
This jaspe design was inspired by the collection of Lilly De Jongh Osborne, our founder's great grandmother, who was a prolific Guatemalan textile collector and scholar in the 1930s. Each of our jaspes have been designed by us in collaboration with our artisan partners. Please note that the design and colours may vary slightly piece by piece due to the handmade nature of the cushions.
This cushion is made from fabric handwoven on a backstrap loom. Back strap loom weaving is an ancient weaving technique practiced for centuries in many parts of the world. All of our Guatemalan Jaspe designs are first made by hand binding the yarns to prepare them to be died and dried in the fields. From there the yarns are set up on the loom with the pattern ready to be weaved by the weaver using his hands and feet. The looms are simple - typically 6-7 rods- often handmade by the weaver and are easily portable making weaving an activity that can be done almost anywhere. The back rod of the loom is tied to a tree or post and the other end has a strap that encircles the waist or backside to allow the weaver to move back or forward to produce the necessary tension while weaving takes place. This type of weaving is a time intensive process and the end result is always unique. Many different designs can be made using this technique but we've focussed on our favourites, the Guatemalan ikats known as "jaspes."
